Heart of the Glacier brings together works created during residencies in Iceland and Arad, two extreme landscapes shaped by powerful geological forces. Moving between glaciers and desert, the camera traces environments that appear timeless and enduring, yet are in constant transformation.
The ground of Iceland consists of layers of fertile prehistoric lava, formed beneath the ice. Lethal when it erupts, it also carries the future within it: soil, plants, animals, life. Volcanic and geothermal activity constantly simmers beneath the mountains, glaciers, and sea. In the deserts surrounding Arad, too, the landscape holds a deep geological history, shaped over hundreds of millions of years.
The series Fata Morgana, binds together elements of fire and water, ice, salt, snow, and blazing sun, creating ice ponds in the Judean Desert and Arctic glaciers in the Negev. The works emerge from an encounter with extreme landscapes and with the temporariness of spaces that appear eternal and endless. They also point toward processes of degradation and disappearance, and to the ecological changes threatening these unique environments and their forms of life.
